President of King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy in Saudi Arabia, Khalid Al-Sultan, said the kingdom has received offers from five countries to build the first two nuclear plants on the Gulf coast.

“The countries are the United States, Russia, France, South Korea and China,” Al-Sultan told a press conference in Riyadh yesterday.

Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest crude oil exporter, plans to build two nuclear reactors to reduce its dependence on oil for power generation.

According to the Saudi official, the cost of one nuclear reactor ranges from $6-7 billion.

Saudi Arabia aims to generate renewable energy with capacity of 3.45 GW by 2020 and 9.5 GW by 2023.

Saudi Energy Minister, Khalid Al-Falih, said earlier that Saudi Arabia is committed to limiting nuclear technology to civilian uses only.
