New modular power station to open in Azerbaijan

Preparations for the opening of the modular power station Lerik with a capacity of 16.5 megawatts are nearing completion.

The Azerbaijani Energy Ministry told Trend that construction and installation work, as well as debugging work have already been completed.

The ministry reported that the construction of two other power stations, Shimal-2 and Ordubad hydroelectric station, is also continuing.

“At the Shimal-2 power station, work continues in accordance with the schedule developed by Azerenergy OJSC. The construction of the second power unit of the plant, its integration with the first power unit, as well as the construction and debugging of the output channel of the refrigeration system, fire extinguishing system and installation for the purification of seawater,” the ministry reported.

At the same time, the construction of substations and switchgears was completed, their safety systems were installed, four 220-kilovolt power lines were built. The station is planned to be commissioned by the end of this year.

Currently, the capacity of the power system of Azerbaijan is more than 6,000 megawatts.

Throughout history, the power industry of Azerbaijan considered to be a dynamically developing industry, which plays a dominant role in the South Caucasus region.

The electric power industry, along with the oil and gas industry, has a leading role in the economy of Azerbaijan. It also occupies an important place in the social infrastructure. To date, there are no settlements in Azerbaijan that do not have access to electricity.

Energy development has always been one of the priority areas of the state’s economic and social policy, and sufficient funds have been allocated from the state budget for maintenance and construction of energy facilities.

Earlier, it was reported that it is planned to commission a power plant in Lerik region with a capacity of 16.5 megawatts till the end of 2018.

In 2017, 21.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity were generated in the republic, of which 20.2 billion kilowatt-hours accounted for thermal power stations and only 1.6 billion kilowatt hours for hydroelectric power stations.
