The controversy over recombinant DNA research

During the meeting of the “Recombinant DNA Discussion” meeting in 1978, at the Jaarbeurshallen in Utrecht the Netherlands, microsurgeon, Johan Van Dongen found out that DNA recombination experiments are technically very simple that time.

The fact that the reference to possible dangers in nuclear systems would be unacceptable is now obsolete by reality. For example, very serious incidents have occurred in the nuclear power stations of Tihange Belgium, Windscale, the current Sellafield United Kingdom, Chernobyl and Three Mile Island.

Nor is there any mention of the nuclear explosion in the Russian Ural, the nuclear explosion in the American Nevada desert, the French trial areas of Mururoa and in the French Sahara. Nor has there been the talk of derailing viruses as a result of the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In addition, the nuclear material needed for atomic weapons, the uranium ore, which was won by black slaves and prisoners of war in the "Congolese Kilo mines" and in former Czechoslovakia and even in former East Germany, also has the necessary Aids similar diseases.

And what about the thousands of under and above-ground atomic bomb tests? Why is a comparison between genetic manipulation with the nuclear systems inadmissible?

We still have to wait and see what genetic manipulation will have in the long run although we have seen a lot of consequence already such as Aids and all kind of so-called allergic reactions.

And it remains to be seen what the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy BSE causing Prpr genes will still produce riddles in our own hereditary system.

In addition to all the benefits so praised by the scientific branch, there will certainly be disadvantages. That much is clear to me. The only question is which?

Because, as I said before, DNA recombination experiments are technically very simple, they do not require expensive investments, they can be carried out in the kitchen of every house and that means that effective control is not possible.

There are many evidence from experiments that the theoretical risks not will but has become reality! The point is only, to what extent has it been sought and to what extent is what is present now sufficient to continue, for example in the direction of the scientific guidelines.

In Porton Down too, many experiments have been conducted with genetic recombination and radiation techniques since the 1950s, turning SV40 viruses, that infect common Coli-bacteria, into bacteriophages. These viruses are able to multiply themselves in a bacterium and then kill the bacterium.

The total cycle, which is the infection with the virus DNA in the bacterium, the multiplication, the replication of the virus DNA in the bacterium, and the killing of the bacterium in which also new virus particles are released, takes about twenty minutes.

In some cases, viruses settle in a bacterium without directly killing them. In addition, the viruses multiply together with their host. And because people were already aware of the danger associated with such genetic recombination techniques, the intestinal bacteria infected with these experiments were first made 'crippled' so that they could not be maintained in the intestines of humans and animals.

The fact that the genetic recombination techniques have also yielded interesting experiments in Porton Down is evident from a report published in 1996 on 'human nuclear guinea pigs', of which the British Peace Movement says that Porton Down was commissioned by the British Ministry of Defense in the 1950's carried out radioactive radiation experiments on two hundred of its own staff.

The dutiful civil servants were injected with radioactive substances or they had to breathe in these substances. Furthermore, the ignorant staff had put on food that contained about ten radioactive substances, including the very dangerous elements of technetium and strontium. In fact, the developments of Aids continued here after the Hitler era.
