Missouri and Illinois co-host foreign buyers tour

Black Angus at Mead Farms of Barnett, Missouri

State agriculture departments in Illinois and Missouri are promoting seedstock cattle to a group of foreign buyers this week. The trade mission has brought Mexican buyers to Missouri and Illinois cattle operations. Bobby Dowson with the Illinois Ag Department says it’s a great way to share resources and grow markets for producers in both states,“This is a U.S. livestock genetic partnership. Federal monies. They give us those monies and we can take two states together and just time and resources are considered – and we can go to multiple herds in both states. And, then, when we come to export there’s more herds, more cattle to choose from.”

Davin Altoff is with the Missouri Department of Agriculture and tells Brownfield Ag News, “Our goal this week is to try to have an opportunity to create sales of over $25,000 dollars.” Altoff says Mexico is a strong and important market for Missouri, “We’re looking at trying to expand our international footprint in the international space for products that we produce here in Missouri. And, certainly, the beef industry is so important to our state.” Missouri is the second biggest cow-calf state behind Texas.
