HENDERSON, Ky. (WFIE) - When one thinks about the state of Kentucky, the first thing that comes to mind is likely bourbon, bluegrass music or horse racing.

However, a new proposal introduced this week by the Henderson Tourist Commission plans to bring Hollywood-style film production to Henderson County.

In a move expected to help boost the region’s economy, both the Henderson Fiscal Court and City Commission have approved the $10,000 membership funding needed for the county to join the West Kentucky Film Commission.

The funding needed to kickstart this process will come from a three-way split between the Henderson Fiscal Court, the Henderson Tourist Commission and the City of Henderson.

This marks a significant step toward attracting filmmakers to the area, bringing in everything from production teams and actors, to local jobs and tourism dollars.

“We really got it all in Kentucky,” said Abby Dixon, Executive Director of the Henderson Tourism Commission.

“What we were missing was a really great incentive to attract filmmakers so that we can capitalize on that economic impact that comes with these big projects. Now, we have that.”

Dixon has been a driving force behind the proposal. She believes that joining the West Kentucky Film Commission will open the door to major economic opportunities.

“Once we get folks in our market, it speaks for itself. The incentives are great. We can really sell our communities based on what filmmakers are looking for,” said Dixon.

The initiative aims to bring film projects to the region, which could see local hotels, short-term rentals and local businesses thrive.

“I am thinking of production teams and talent staying at our local hotels or local short term rentals. I am thinking hiring tradesmen, whether it is a construction worker helping build a set or an electrician being hired to assist with that. I think, all across the board, our local business community can benefit from this,” said Dixon.

While California and Georgia currently dominate the film industry, Kentucky is emerging as an attractive alternative for filmmakers, thanks to its diverse landscapes and incentives.

“I think what really puts us over the edge in western Kentucky, and specifically here in Henderson, is we are so accommodating and hospitable,” said Dixon. “We have a workforce that is interested in diversifying and getting into this field, so I really think we are gonna see some big wins through this.”

Since the funding was approved, Henderson County will join a growing list of western Kentucky counties already involved in the West Kentucky Film Commission, such as Daviess, Hopkins and Muhlenberg.

Dixon emphasized the power of collaboration, noting that the strength of these counties will make the area more competitive in attracting major film projects.

“Our list of western Kentucky communities that are joining forces in this consortium is growing. We are stronger when we are together.” said Dixon.
