BRAWLEY — The Imperial Irrigation District and a coalition of local, state, and national groups are hosting a special Community Climate Action Day event on Saturday, May 17, and are seeking volunteer help.
The morning will consist of planting hundreds of native plants in the Shank Alamo Wetlands, located just east of Brawley. The work will play a key role in maintaining and enhancing the area, as the wetlands serve as an open space that benefits the surrounding environment.
“We’re asking volunteers to be a part of this great community event for this special Community Climate Action Day,” said IID Board Vice Chairman JB Hamby. “This wetland area is a very important part of the local ecosystem, and there are many benefits to this planting project. IID and its partners are excited to be part of the team that is bringing this fun and educational volunteer opportunity to our community.”
The coalition includes the District, Keep California Beautiful, Keep America Beautiful®, the City of Imperial, and Barrett Biological Enterprises, in partnership with California Climate Action Corps, a program of California Volunteers, Office of the Governor.
The wetlands will benefit from improved water quality and erosion prevention, enhancement of the area, and overall improved conditions. These wetlands help treat drainage water that flows into the Alamo River and then into the Salton Sea. Adding more plants will boost the wetlands' positive effect.
“It really will be great to see generous volunteers step up to participate, working to enhance this very important wetlands area,” said Steve Charlton, senior program manager for IID’s Water Department. “The planting of the native plants, such as bulrush and cattails, will help a great deal.”
The Shank Alamo Wetlands is just one of several located in the Imperial Valley to improve water quality and benefit the environment.
The planting will be held from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will be provided a free lunch, refreshments, and a cap.
