ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The Newfoundland and Labrador government has given Kabby the green light to operate as a ride-sharing service.

In October 2023, the provincial government announced plans for ride-sharing, and on December 21, 2023, laws allowing these services took effect.

To operate in the province, ride-sharing companies like Kabby must get a licence from the Registrar of Motor Vehicles. Drivers also need a Class 4 licence.

Kabby, founded by Frank Nie and Haris Barki, began recruiting and vetting drivers in January.

The app, which can be downloaded from the Apple and Google Play stores, is the second ride-sharing service to launch in the province, following Uber’s introduction in April.

The first licence was issued to Redsea Riding in January, but that was quickly revoked after it was learned its owner was facing sexual assault charges.
