ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — St. John’s-based Avalon Laboratories is now Atlantic Canada’s first and only accredited private medical lab.

The new designation allows it to begin offering 44 tests for blood and urine and 15 tests for specific substances of abuse at its 14,000-square-foot facility.

The accreditation ensures Avalon met the regulatory requirements set by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and Health Canada.

This service is expected to reduce turnaround times, provide savings to employers and decrease local companies’ carbon footprint by testing more specimens in the province.

The accreditation, audited by Accreditation Canada Diagnostics, is an internationally recognized mark of excellence, assuring clients — public health-care providers or those in the private sector — that the lab meets established competency standards to collect and test specimens for employment and insurance-related purposes.
