KENTVILLE, N.S. — A North Kentville home is still standing but it was badly damaged by fire following a Wednesday afternoon blaze.

Ian Fairclough, a deputy fire chief with the Kentville Volunteer Fire Department and a journalist with the SaltWire Network, said they responded to a single-storey home that was on fire around 1:10 p.m. Sept. 1.

Smoke could be seen billowing from the home, located in the 1100 block of Lanzy Road.

“When we arrived, there was heavy fire showing on the outside of the building,” said Fairclough.

Firefighters mounted both an exterior and interior attack, pulling ceilings to access the attic and venting the roof.

“There was extensive damage to the home. The cause is still under investigation,” he said.

No injuries were reported, however one firefighter was treated for suspected heat exhaustion on scene and then taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

Fairclough said they believe a pet exited the house and went into the woods nearby the property.

Mutual aid came from New Minas, Waterville, Port Williams and Canning, and Greenwich Fire was on standby at the Kentville station.

“It was a fast-moving fire and it was obviously a very warm day, which taxes the crews to a degree and that’s why we always have the extra help coming,” he added.

The fire was under control within a half an hour but fire crews stayed on scene until about 4:15 p.m. to do some overhaul and douse potential hotspots.

The Office of the Fire Marshal was called to investigate the cause.
