BELCO Engages Company To Test Emissions

August 26, 2020

BELCO  has engaged a company to test the emissions from the North Power Station, and said they will be carrying out tests this week “which may result in smoke and potentially soot being emitted from the North Power Station exhaust stack.”

A spokesperson said, “Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited [BELCO] today advised that Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S [BWSC], an engineering and contracting company, has been engaged to carry out testing on emissions from the North Power Station.

“This action has been taken following an incident that occurred on June 20, 2020 that resulted in soot being dispersed in the Berkeley Hill neighbourhood adjacent to the North Power Station.

“As a result of the incident, BELCO conducted an investigation which revealed that a build-up of residue from the initial commissioning of the engines was emitted through the exhaust stack when one of the engines was restarted following a shut-down for servicing.

“BWSC will be carrying out tests this week, to further assess the source of the emissions, which may result in smoke and potentially soot being emitted from the North Power Station exhaust stack. BELCO’s dedicated Occupational Health Safety and Environment team [OHSE] will be monitoring the testing and will take any action necessary to mitigate any issues that may arise as a result.

“As a reminder, if a property owner believes they have been affected by emissions from the plant they can email BELCO’s OHSE office at ohse@belco.bm or call 299 2802 and provide their property address, name and contact number.

“At BELCO we take the health and safety of our employees and the community very seriously and we have taken every measure to ensure that any damage to affected properties is mitigated to the highest environmental standard and to ensure such incidents do not happen in future.

“BELCO is also committed to working with the Regulatory Authority, the Department of Energy and Natural Resources [DENR] to follow their directives and also implement the Integrated Resources Plan that will ensure a cleaner, more renewable energy supply to our valued customers.”

What ? It’s a brand new State of the art plant. What is belco hiding with all this voluntary action. Why more equipment and testing when state of the art engines already have equipment installed on them. What are the instruments saying ? If all is well why do you need more testing? Obviously something or not as expected. Tell the truth belco.

You must have missed the part where the area MP demanded action in respect of an anomolous belch of soot last week or the week before.

“We have taken every measure to ensure that any damage to affected properties is mitigated to the highest environmental standard.” What a bunch of B&%$£%$T! BELCO you are just trying to mitigate your potential lawsuits.

HOW CAN THE GOVERNMENT OF BERMUDA PERMIT THEM TO TEST “WHICH MAY RESULT IN SMOKE AND POTENTIALLY SOOT BEING EMITTED”??? Are we all guinea pigs in the area surrounding this new smokestack?

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I just had my roof power washed from the crap that happened in June and I will have to have it redone again now. They won’t come out and test my water. How do I know it is safe for drinking? What about our health?

How can you even say “We have taken every measure to ensure that any damage to affected properties is mitigated to the highest environmental standard.”? You have done NOTHING to mitigate damage for over 100 years!!!
