A solar power plant will be built in Turkey’s south-western Antalya province, the Antalya municipality said in a message Jan. 17.

According to the message, an agreement has been recently signed between Antalya’s municipality and the West Mediterranean Development Agency to build a 2.82 megawatt solar power plant.

The total cost of the project is 9.3 million Turkish liras.

"Of the total cost of the project 3.1 million liras will account for the municipality," the message said. “The construction of the solar power plant will be launched this year."

After the solar power plant is built, farmers will be provided with free electricity.

In 2016-2017, $1.9 billion was invested in the country’s energy sector. Around 30 percent of those funds were invested in the development of renewable energy sources, according to the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources.

A tender for construction of wind farms was held in Turkey on Aug. 3, 2017. Germany’s Siemens won the tender. A German-Turkish consortium Siemens-Turkerler-Kalyon was established to carry out the construction work.

Presently, 600 hydropower plants operate in Turkey.
