Blast fells power station bunkers in SA

Coal bunkers at Port Augusta's old coal-fired power station have been felled by explosives as Flinders Power continues to demolish the site.

Specialist charges were used on Tuesday to bring down the bunkers which stood at 47 metres high.

An exclusion zone was established around the site with the upper Spencer Gulf also closed to boating.

Flinders Power said the bunkers were washed to reduce the amount of coal dust generated by the explosions and other dust mitigation measures were put in place.

A video taken by the company shows the bunkers coming down in a matter of seconds.

Much of the site is now clear, though the 200m smokestack remains ahead of demolition later this year.

The Northern Power Station, in South Australia's mid-north, began operations in 1985 and ended electricity production in May last year.
