tate-owned electricity company PLN has so far signed contracts with a number of private companies for the construction of power plants with a capacity of generating 31,000 megawatts, as part of the implementation of the government’s program to procure an extra 35,000 MW of electricity by 2019.

“By the end of this year, there will be [contracts] to construct another 600 MW of power plants,” said PLN president director Sofyan Basir at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry in Jakarta on Thursday.

Several power plants as part of the 35,000 MW electricity program have also come into operation, he added.

On Thursday, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan witnessed a signing ceremony of nine power purchase agreements (PPA) between PLN and private companies, which will construct the power plants.

The power plants to be constructed are one hydro power plant, one geothermal power plant and seven mini-hydro power plants.

The projects with a total capacity of 640.65 MW will be constructed in Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi and Nusa Tenggara with a total investment of Rp 20.4 trillion (US$1.51 billion).

The 35,000 MW electricity program is President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo’s ambitious program to end electricity shortages across the country. (bbn)
