NJ mayor helping in disaster areas of Mexico, Puerto Rico

Mayor Felix Roque of West New York traveled to Mexico City with a group of volunteers to help with the earthquake relief efforts on Friday.

The group is beginning in Mexico City to help gather supplies and food to distribute to different areas of Mexico, including Morelos and Puebla.

"The situation here is not good," Roque told The Jersey Journal. "We have been working hard, and we are hoping to make a difference."

While in Mexico, Roque has been in communication with the U.S. ambassador there, who is originally from Englewood, and other officials to spread the news of necessary supplies the people of Mexico need.

Among the needs, he said, are large tents that fit several people, mobile and environmentally friendly toilets and kitchenettes, mobile generators and power plants and water purifiers. They are asking for no food or clothing donations.

If you are able to donate any of these items, they can be dropped off at the West New York Democratic Headquarters, 5301 Palisade Ave.

Roque says he is also going to visit Puerto Rico to provide similar medical support.
