Lithuanian Seimas adopts resolution on Belarus' threat to nuclear safety in Europe

BC, Vilnius, 22.09.2020.Print version
The Seimas of Lithuania has on Tuesday adopted a resolution stating that the Astravyets nuclear power plant in Belarus, now nearing completion, poses a threat to nuclear safety of the whole of Europe, therefore preparatory work for its operation, which is absolutely unacceptable due to the existing political instability, should be immediately suspended, informs LETA/BNS.

The resolution was backed by 72 lawmakers.

The authors of the resolution call on the Seimas to turn to the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) and ask it to take measures to stop the launched of Astravyets NPP's reactors until all doubts on the compliance of the construction of the facility and its readiness to operate are dispelled.

There are also plans to urge the Russian society, nuclear energy and civil safety specialists to have influence on their country's institutions to stop the launch of the Astravyets nuclear power plan and thus lower the risk of a nuclear disaster.

The resolution also expresses concern over the persecution of public figures in Belarus as they are seeking more publicity on Astravyets construction related issues.
